Kuta, long famous for its golden white coastline that curves north from the Ngurah Rai International Airport’s runway in Tuban, continues to attract visitors with highlights other than the favourite surfing coast itself. Despite the rapid progress following the beach’s fame since the vagabond wave-riding heydays of the 70s and the establishment of hotels, restaurants and bars that ensued throughout this once quiet fishing village, Kuta offers a handful of other interesting sights worth finding out. 23Vihara Dharmayana, also known by the names Leeng Gwan Kuta Temple and Kongco Bio Kuta Chinese Temple, is one of Bali’s considerable landmarks, but it is slightly hidden and located on a side-street off Kuta's main beach roads. The Buddhist temple is one of the oldest in the area, dating back two centuries. However, its main structures are well-maintained, and feature intricate Far Eastern architecture painted in bright and vivid colours. The courtyard is calm with constant wafts of incense smoke from the altars and large bowls. The red roof tiles are easily visible from the busy road. Circus Waterpark is a leisure park fit for the whole family, located on Jalan Kediri in Tuban, only 10 minutes north from Ngurah Rai International Airport. This park serves as a smaller and inexpensive alternative to the existing Waterbom Bali in Kuta, which is approximately 1.5km north. The water park features various slides and a lazy river, as well as a dedicated kids’ area that offers a variety of fun activities such as fountains, water cannons, and mini train rides. 57Trick Art 3D Gallery offers another fun and interactive option where you can strike a pose against detailed murals and paintings that show up stunningly three-dimensional in photos. 9Kuta Sea Turtle Conservation SiteA special highlight on the shores of Kuta Beach, and practically beside the prominent Balawista Lifeguard tower and headquarters, is a sea turtle hatchery and educational facility known as Kuta Beach Sea Turtle Conservation. Set out with the main purpose to protect sea turtles and boost their numbers, the site has released over tens of thousands of hatchlings over the years. The conservation centre usually gears up for breeding season mid-year around the months of June and July, when thousands of turtle eggs hatch on temporary sites around the sands of Kuta. A joint effort with the Sea Turtle Society, they also set out to involve local communities and visitors to participate in their efforts and exciting releases. Established in 2002, the conservation site features a large eye-catching pen structure in the form of a giant sea turtle that is great for photos. 10Ground Zero MemorialThe Ground Zero monument sits on the border of Kuta and Legian, built as a permanent site and tribute to the fallen victims of the 2002 Legion bombing. It takes over the site of the destroyed Paddy's Pub that once stood famous on the main Legian road. The bar was reborn further down along Jalan Legian, named ‘Paddy's: Reloaded’ and continues to attract partygoers to the new venue that is open on all four sides, with a high roof and hard tiled floors, giving it a light and airy feel. The Ground Zero memorial is made of intricately carved sandstone, set with a large marble plaque bearing the names and nationalities of the victims. The monument is well maintained by the local government and is illuminated at night. A memorial ceremony takes place every year on October 12 to honour the victims, hosted jointly by the Indonesian and Australian governments
